Huawei States HarmonyOS NEXT Kernel is Three Times More Efficient Than Linux Kernel

Huawei has unveiled a self-developed operating system called HarmonyOS NEXT. During the development event, the CEO described the operating system as completely independent and equipped with a comprehensive AI framework. The CEO also claimed that the Harmony kernel is three times more efficient than the Linux kernel.

Huawei's HarmonyOS NEXT appears to be the company's "next big thing." Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, describes it as "a real operating system and not an Android skin." The CEO also made it clear that the operating system is not based on Linux or Unix.

Instead, HarmonyOS NEXT uses a self-developed Harmony kernel, which Huawei claims is three times more memory-efficient than the Linux kernel. The company states that the operating system uses a "heterogeneous, native" mechanism that enables a smooth user experience.

HarmonyOS NEXT is not only efficient but also places great emphasis on security. During the event, Huawei explained that the new operating system has three top-level security certifications with security at the kernel level. Additionally, it features on-device AI capabilities to compete with custom Android implementations from other leading brands.

Huawei's main goal with HarmonyOS NEXT is to provide an operating system focused on privacy and optimized for a seamless user experience. This move also allows the company to become independent of US-based technologies on which Huawei smartphones' operating systems rely.

Whether Huawei can deliver on its promises with HarmonyOS NEXT remains to be seen. The operating system is currently in the developer preview phase, with the stable version expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2024.
